Navigating CPS: Everything you want to know about
Chicago Public Schools but were afraid to ask.
This presentation focuses on the roles, rights and responsibilities of Students, Parents, Teachers,
Administrators and Key Central Office Personnel in relation to the education process. Also understanding the
relevant rules, regulations, policies and practices applicable to a successful academic experience. These
include uniform disciplinary code, CPS and ISBE mandates and NCLB.  It is designed so that the audience
member leaves with a clear understanding of his/her relationship to the other players and how to obtain
information or redress necessary to benefit the student.
IEP & U
(Individualized Education Plan)
IEP's and 504 plans are an options that improve the quality of educational experience for
students in special or general education environments. This seminar helps parents to
understand the nature and importance of the document and how to enforce it, make sure
that the parents voice is heard in the process and how to deal with the perception of stigma.
Selecting a Selective Admission School:
Gifted, Classical, IB, Academic Center, College Prep and what it
means.
This seminar provides a working definition of the selective admission programs available through CPS. These types of school include,
Classical, Gifted, International Baccalaureate, Academic Centers and College Preparatory.  It will also cover what the testing timetable,
requirements and expectations are for each program and how admission to said program can benefit a student.
MOB Action: Mothers of Boys Unite!
Boys will be boys and are often by nature boisterous. What is a mother of a boy to do when the
mere fact of being a boy makes you a behavior or disciplinary problem. This seminar gives
parents the tools and information to observe and respond. It's a man's world.... but he's not one
yet.
Gifted and Talented? Or is my child just weird?
What does it mean to be gifted? Why are children of color and boys underrepresented in the gifted population?  How
do I advocate and parent my gifted child? What are the pros and cons of being labeled gifted and getting a gifted
education?  Are gifted kids perfect students?This seminar is designed to answer these and other questions for parents
and educators.
Race and Achievement: Analyzing the Skills Gap
Recent reports, based on standardized achievement test scores indicate that the skills gap between blacks and whites is
actually increasing.  What are these reports? What do they mean? How can we use information contained in the reports to improve the
quality of education that every child receives.

three R's.
Reading, 'riting and 'rithmatic go hand in hand with arts, athletics and achievement. This seminar explores how
various mental and physical milestones are related. How to expose and educate your child in order to create a
happy well rounded person.
Parental Involvement and Student Achievement
Parental Involvement is a key factor in student achievement, however most of us parent in the same way that we were parented.
Generally,  this is sufficient except that  changes in the Social Economic and Academic landscape call for new strategies. This course
encompasses this discussion as well as providing strategies, examples and support for parental involvement as well as explaining the
rights, roles and responsibilities of parents in the education of a child.
The goal is to confirm and empower the parent's sense of ownership in the education of the child and support the child modeling the
same
